With the pandemic perpetually raging throughout the United States our use of outdoor space is ever expanding. We are heading to the woods to hike, going to national parks, swimming at the beach and recreating in other outdoor areas more than ever.

But what happens if you get lost and you can’t find your way to safety?

A startup IT company, What3words, created tech that can now tell emergency responders exactly were you are; even if you don’t know yourself.

Los Angeles, Arizona, United Kingdom, Canada and Japan have all incorporated this technology into their emergency responder programs.

What3words has assigned each 3m square in the world with a unique three-word address that will never change. This ensures that a person is located immediately.

So how do we, as civilians, use the What3words app in an emergency?

  1. Find the three-word address for your current location on the free what3words app for IOS and Android. It works offline for areas with unreliable data connection.

  1. Share your three-word address over the phone to the call handler.

  1. The emergency service can then coordinate a response directly to the exact location where help is needed.

Whats3words has already started saving lives and is expanding so that more emergency responders have this in their toolbox.
